Established in 1891 as the University of Texas Medical Department, UTMB has grown from one building, 23 students and 13 faculty members to a modern health science center with more than 70 major buildings, more than 2,500 students and more than 1,000 faculty. The 84-acre campus includes four schools, three institutes for advanced study, a major medical library, a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, an affiliated Shriners Burns Hospital, and numerous research facilities. UTMB is a component of the University of Texas System.The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is committed to educating a diverse team of health science professionals through its schools of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences, and Graduate Biomedical Sciences. The university currently enrolls more than 2,800 students and medical residents. The university also offers a number of distance-education programs for nursing students as well as continuing education courses for practicing health professionals.
Medical research at UTMB informs the educational programs and delves into a broad range of promising topics that often have immediate application to patient care. Areas of research strength include neuroscience and neurological recovery; gastrointestinal health; environmental health and asthma; infectious diseases, biodefense and vaccine development; cancer; molecular medicine, structural biology and proteomics; aging; and diabetes. UTMB also is home to the Institute for the Medical Humanities, the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity, and three World Health Organization Collaborating Centers.
