Photo Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).

Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdioces, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

Pam10/9/2008 12:47:00 PMI toured the Bishop's Palace in 1969 with my grandparents. We were told immediately upon entering the third floor was not part of the tour because it was held for when the Bishop was in town. It was used as his apartment. No photographing of the interior of the house was allowed either. We were told the home was the first home with a conveyor belt running from the butler's pantry to the dining area AND it was so wonderful to hear the rooms were actually designed around the fireplaces. And also to hear the Cheribs painted on the ceiling had the faces of the owner/builder's daughters. It is a superb home and is an absolute must. I recommend anyone I know headed to TX stop in Galveston and see it.
Dan8/21/2008 11:00:00 AMThis house is a true masterpiece. The guides were good, though I do agree with a few of the others on here that notification that the third floor wasn't on the tour would have been nice. All in all it was a good tour.
Jane8/16/2008 9:24:00 PMThe tour was interesting but short. The whole thing is over in 45 mins. I feel that the tour guides should allow guests more time to view the mansion. I felt very rushed. Also, they should tell people that the third floor is not open to the public.
Amy7/8/2008 10:41:00 AMI love that palace! It's so awesome!
Terry7/3/2008 12:52:00 PMGalveston has several must see mansions but this one is the best.
Karen6/23/2008 1:32:00 PMThis was an awesome tour. The mansion is absolutely exquisite! I was most intrigued by the fire places! The artwork on the walls was great also. I was amazed at the amenities that they had based on the time period.....running hot & cold water and electricity! Wow! This is a must see!
